Native camera formats such as .fpx, .jpg or uncompressed .tif are quite large, but, preferable.
Good quality native graphics formats such as Corel or Photo shop families work well, but are also very large.
A good scanner transfer format is .tif.
Compressed .jpg images lose information when compressed. When expanded, the picture quality usually diminishes substantially.
.gif format works well, however, the color range is very limited.
